Nathan Brennan identifies as a proud Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung and Gamilaraay man who was born on Awabakal Country – Newcastle.

Nathan is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Coffs Harbour and District Local Aboriginal Land Council and has held that position since June 2018. As the CEO his duties include:

  • Overseeing the implementation of the Land Council Community Land and Business Plan 2018-2022
  • Managing the Land Councils operational budget, spending and financial allocation and management in line with delegations
  • Managing the organization human resources including staffing, rostering, recruiting, professional development and training
  • Ensuring the organization meets it legislative requirements under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983, this includes maintain accurate records of members/governance board meetings, membership, financial records, tenancy records and asset register
  • Organising members/governance board meetings including Annual General Meeting and Annual Reporting
  • Building partnerships with a range of government stakeholders including Non-Government Organisatons, Local, State and Federal Government to
  • Managing Aboriginal cultural heritage monitoring and protection in line with the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974
  • Implementing risk management strategies

Nathan has extensive experience in the delivery of training programs through his employment in various positions with TAFE NSW from 2008 – 2015. This includes Acting Manager of Aboriginal Education and Training, and Senior Education Officer with the NSW Dept. of Education and Training’s Aboriginal Education Unit.

Nathan also has extensive local Government experience from 3 years as a Human Resources Officer with the Newcastle City Council, where he was responsible for delivery on their Aboriginal Employment Strategy. This included increasing Newcastle Council Aboriginal employment by over 50% during those 3 years.

Nathan has a passion for learning and teaching Gumbaynggirr language. Nathan currently teaches on a number of language programs for the Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation where he delivers a weekly pre-school program and two community classes (Grafton and Coffs Harbour).

To complement his professional experiences and language teaching, Mr Brennan holds the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts – Major in Linguistics (Currently completing)
  • Advanced Diploma of Management and Leadership
  • Diploma of Business
  • Certificate IV in Bookkeeping (Currently completing)
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

Mr Brennan is passionate about the revival and teaching of Aboriginal languages. His personal life goal is to be a proficient speaker of Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung and Gamilaraay languages.
