More than 1,000 people from all over NSW have converged on NSW Parliament to call for a renewed relationship between Aboriginal people and the State Government.
The Beyond Survival march, held on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, asked the NSW Government to respect Aboriginal self-determination and listen to the expertise of our community-controlled organisations.
Aboriginal peak bodies NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC), Link-Up NSW, NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Incorporated (AECG), Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) NSW/ACT, Aboriginal Child, Family and Community Care State Secretariat (ABSEC), Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council (AHMRC) and the First Peoples Disability Network (FPDN) to host the march.
Together we form the Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (CAPO), a group promoting a positive agenda for change, and united leadership and advocacy for Aboriginal communities.
In a meeting in NSW Parliament House after the march attended by CAPO members on three priorities for Aboriginal rights and wellbeing. We are now working to identify these top three priorities as a collective.
It’s just the beginning of what we hope will be an ongoing and productive conversation, leading up to and beyond the 2019 NSW election.
