Yesterday, a deceased Blainsville Beaked Whale wash-up on Park Beach. As part of the response, our Darrunda Wajaarr Rangers were on site to provide logistical support and inform cultural guidance. Marine animals have cultural significance to Gumbaynggirr people, their totem systems, kinship and lore.
The inclusion of Gumbaynggirr people in the response is through a partnership program between the CH&DLALC and Dolphin Marine Rescue called “Sea Country Custodians”. This partnership ensures a Gumbaynggirr person is present to provide cultural guidance to support marine animal rescues and post mortems.
